Medical

Since 2004, Friends of CME Trust has been supporting the medical work at 3 hospital sites in North-East DRC: at Beni, Bunia and Nyankunde. These sites are part of CME (Centre Medical Evanglique), which was established in 1966 at Nyankunde by local churches. The hospitals help meet the medical needs of the Congolese population in an area the size of France. They also run nursing schools and provide university-level medical training.

The most specific ways that we support the medical care at these sites is through Sponsor-a-bed hospital

Each hospital bed costs about £1 a day to run. Patients receive no help to pay for their bed and there is no Government support for them or the hospital. The funds received will be used to pay the bed price for the most vulnerable patients identified by hospital doctors and nurses. In addition, sponsor-a-bed extends to pay for these patients’ costs of:

Essential medicines and operations

This help comprises grants to pay for operations and essential medicines which is allocated to the most-needy by the hospital doctors and nurses. CME has been able to help thousands of patients over the years.

In 2023, with our support, 221 patients at Nyankunde received $8,957 of free medical care. 185 of the patients were children. At Beni/Sose 120 patients received similar support valued at $11,041. 41 of them were children. In total of the 341 patients, 180 were male and 161 female.
