Ebola continues to spread throughout most areas of Ituri with some cases further afield in Uganda and Kivu. There is no indication yet that the epidemic has been contained.
Insecurity and poverty are root causes of the epidemic. A distrust of authority, some local health beliefs, and how to care for the sick and the dead are important factors that are fuelling the spread of the disease.
A co-ordinated response to the epidemic is in place, led by the government and the World Health Organisation. There is a great need for more resources to protect healthcare workers and trace all contacts.
CME has been badly affected, both in Bunia and at Nyankunde. There are increasing numbers of patients with Ebola at both sites. Healthcare workers have become sick and several have died.
Please continue to pray for CME and the whole of the region. They need our support.
